The Henley Water Polo Club is the oldest Water Polo Club in South Australia, having been one of the original founding clubs in 1953.
In the years between 1953 and 1985 the club was located at the Henley Olympic Pool, a salt-water pool located on the foreshore at Henley Beach. The Club at this point in time was an integral part of the Henley & Grange Swimming Club and through this close bond many young children had an opportunity of learning to swim, undertaking competitive swimming until their mid teens and then moving across to play Water Polo. This progression meant that members were associated with the club for 15 or more years from the age of ten through to there mid to late twenties.
Due to the high cost of maintaining the Henley Pool it was closed in 1985, the swimming club then moved to an outdoor-unheated 25-metre school pool. Whilst this facility provided adequate water space for those children who wanted to undertake competitive swimming the dimensions and depth of this pool was not suitable for the training or playing of Water Polo. As a result of this those members who wanted to concentrate on playing Water Polo were forced to move to Adelaide Aquatic Centre (AAC) which was then the only pool available that could accommodate the sport.
The issue of adequate facilities was the driving force in 1987 for the Water Polo group to formally breakaway from the Henley & Grange Swimming Club and become an Incorporated Body in its own right. Because of the long history and tradition that the Water Polo club had built up over the years the new club were honoured to be able to continue the club name and as a result of this the Henley Water Polo Club Inc was born.
Over the years the club has had outstanding success both as a club and the performances of its members. We have had by far the highest number of players from a South Australia club selected to play for Australia. Whilst the club is proud of this feat we are just as proud of all those who have taken up the sport and contributed to the continued success of the club.
